The Czech Republic Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with Swedish defense company SAAB Dynamics AB for the delivery of 24 MARS wheeled armored vehicles equipped with RBS 70 NG very short-range air defense systems.
According to the press release, Lubor Koudelka, Chief Director of the Armament and Acquisitions Section of the Ministry of Defense, and Johan Stjärnlöv, Director of Sales and Marketing of the Swedish manufacturer SAAB Dynamics AB, has signed a contract for 24 wheeled MARS armored vehicles with an integrated RBS 70 NG air defense system.
The very short-range RBS systems will be installed on MARS armored vehicles with a turret station from the domestic company SVOS from Přelouč. The user will be the 25th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, deliveries are planned for the years 2028 to 2030.
The army has been looking for a suitable means of transport for RBS 70 sets, which would provide air defense for larger units of ground units, for many years.
"Experience from the war in Ukraine clearly confirms that the acquisition of firepower will meet the requirements of ground air defense units for sufficient mobility and protection of anti-aircraft system operators in the framework of fulfilling the tasks of protecting ground forces in the national and international environment," said Lubor Koudelka, Senior Director of the Armament and Acquisitions Section of the Ministry of Defense. According to him, by signing the contract, the Ministry of Defense is also responding to the requirements of NATO and its members for more intensive building of capabilities in the field of air defense.
By acquiring the RBS 70 NG very short-range system, which is supplemented by a turret station on the chassis of the MARS vehicle, the army will gain greater mobility and ballistic protection for the crew. "We are responding to the nature of contemporary conflicts, where mobility and protection of forces are a priority," explained Colonel Jaroslav Daverný, commander of the 25th Anti-Aircraft Regiment.
The contract also includes the purchase of another 8 pieces of separate portable anti-aircraft missile systems RBS 70 NG. The delivery also includes 80 pieces of RBS 70 missiles and, among other things, training equipment and devices, spare parts, equipment for maintenance and repairs, personnel training, etc. The Strakonice anti-aircraft forces currently have a total of 16 older RBS 70 systems and 16 modern RBS 70 NG (New Generation) systems.
The value of the public contract is 1.86 billion Swedish crowns, which is 4.2 billion CZK excluding VAT at the current exchange rate.
